Documentation / MCP tools

MCP tools

Connect your agent to tools provided by an external MCP server.

An MCP tool lets your agent use actions offered by an external server.

Before you start

Have the server's HTTP/HTTPS URL, permission to create tools and any credentials the server requires. Inspect its available actions and choose those your agent needs.

Connect the server

  1. In Tools, create a tool in the MCP category.
  2. Open its configuration and enter the full server URL.
  3. Select a credential if authentication is required.
  4. Configure the tool filter when you want to restrict the catalog used.
  5. Save and refresh the catalog to inspect discovered tools.
  6. Attach the tool to the agent or step where it will be used.

Guide the agent

Explain in the instructions when to use the tool and what to do if it fails. Do not request an action that the server catalog does not offer.

For an order lookup, for example, the server must provide a lookup tool and the agent must collect its required inputs before execution.

Test the connection

Ask a question requiring the tool. Inspect the response, parameters and execution result. Refresh the catalog before testing again if the server changed its tools.

ProblemWhat to check
Cannot connectURL, availability and backend access to the server
Authentication rejectedSelected credential and authorized server access
Missing toolUpdated catalog and configured filter
Wrong actionDescription, parameters and agent instructions

A call may change external data. Use appropriate server permissions and test credentials when validating writes. Filtering the catalog does not replace authorization in the external system.
